Filming:
Day 1: 30/9/21
During our first filming session our location was around Bristol, so for the day we traveled around various locations to gather our shots we had planned out on our storyboard. We had planned to film outside, but as it rained so during some of the filming one of us had hold an umbrella.
In each location we filmed a lot of establishing shots for the start of our film opening as these were to establish the location of our characters in the film. At the start of filming each shot was 5 seconds long and we had not realised that they were not long enough to see what was happening in each scene. However as we realised quickly we were still at the same location and refilmed only the 6 or 7 shots we had just filmed. In our next filming session we hope to travel down to Weston Super-mare which ruby is responsible for looking at train times.
Day 2: 1/10/21
During our second day filming we all met at Bristol Temple meads to film establishing shots of the train station and also close ups of the characters waiting for the train as in our storyline they are on a day trip. I believe we all acted professionally as on the train we also had window shots to film, and we managed to do this quickly and calmly so we did not disturb the members of the public. As the train journey to Weston was short we got very little footage of the train view, however we did manage to successfully gather the scenes where the actors needed to act. The actors acted professionally and we were able to film without disturbing the other passengers.
During the day we walked all around weston following the storyboard and schedule. Whilst filming the shots that have audio in, we released after watching a few that even with the deadcat mic, we underestimated how windy it would be near the beach during autumn. We filmed more shots than we planned to try and get a couple that word worked and waited until other background noises stopped, such as the beeping on a crosswalk, to limit the amount of noise that would cover the script. After filming all of our day shots we took a break to explore areas whilst waiting for the day to pass as we needed some scenes in the evening/ night to use that type of lighting.
Once the sun began to set we set up in our chosen location and recorded the rest of the shots which did not take long as there were not that many. Around 6ish we had about 5 more shots to film and we were catching the train back at 7. Therefore this ment were on schedule and had plenty of time to walk to the station. We chose some locations that were on our path back to the train station. During one of these shots I was in charge of asking a stranger if they wouldn’t mind having a small role in our film as it was a part of our film idea. Luckily this couple agreed to this and we managed to complete this shot. We then later took the train home after finishing our last scene in a street nearby.
Day 3: 14/10/21
During our last filming session our group focused hard on what additional shots we needed to gather that we had missed on our first few times filming which we figured out in our second editing session. We had walked down to one of our group member’s houses to film establishing shots of where one of the protagonists lived and also got a few close up shots to initiate the character. As we had planned to film a few shots outside, we were lucky the weather was to the standard we wanted as it ensured our shots turned out to fit the conventions of our subgenre.
Inside our location we were situated in her bedroom and filmed lots of different close up’s where the actor performed different styles of scenes from our storyboard to ensure we would not miss anything out in this filming session. Each of these shots were about 5 or 7 seconds long. However in one of the scenes we had not noticed the camera leg was visible in the shot through the mirror so this meant we had to refilm that shot. Overall I think we maintained a professional manner as well as the actor, as we were able to finish filming on time, even though on some occasions we had shots that were unusable.
Day 4: 2/12/21
On this day we split into two groups to work more efficiently, me & Libby making props to film and Ruby & India editing. During this we printed off maps, newspaper articles, police reports and photos to improve our missing person scene. This was then all used to make a detective board, the prop that would then be placed in ruby’s room. Whilst me and Libby did this, Ruby and India continued editing on Premiere Pro before deciding about additional scenes and then filmed the footage around the school site. At the end we swapped roles whilst me and Ruby researched additional titles for the rest of the opening and Libby and India edited the new footage. This was successful as we were productive and all shared the roles.
Day 5: 3/12/21
From the other editing session we noticed we needed a key scene to tie in the prop we made previously. Therefore we decided to go to Ruby’s house to film the detective's board in the character Rhegan’s room to establish who it belonged to. After setting up the board near Ruby’s desk we took close ups, extreme close ups, long shots and also a pan and exported this footage to edit.
Editing:
7/10/21
During our first editing session we set up projects on premiere pro and uploaded footage from our first two days of filming. This took roughly 5 mins as it took longer to load as we had filmed a lot of footage which included behind the scenes clips. After that we then sorted through each of the clips and began to rename each clip so it would be easier to find specific scenes. We shared these jobs to reduce our tasks as that much footage would be very time consuming. I was responsible for renaming clips from the second half of day 1. However we then realised on our projects we would not have access to what all of us had renamed, so we then all changed the rest of the clips as well. As this took the whole lesson we had planned to select and put together clips to start the order of our filming opening.
12/10/21
Originally we wanted to begin to watch the footage and build our film opening separately as we thought it would benefit us if we saw how each of us thought to edit and how we used different clips. However due to me being ill on previous editing sessions we no longer continued this idea and decided to put it together as a group on one project. However during this session there were only two of us present, but we still began piecing together the footage. Ruby was in charge of selecting and watching the clips to get ideas to choose in the source window and I was responsible for adding them to the timeline and putting them in order. After putting them together we realised that the footage did not flow as we thought it would and found we needed to record additional footage to bring it together.
20/10/21
During this session, as I was not there the group explained to me that they went through the footage me and ruby had filmed and renamed all the clips so it would be easier for when we reconciled as a group and it would save time. I believe this was a successful editing session as even though I was absent, the group were productive and acted professionally.
21/10/21
In this filming session I quickly viewed what the group had done the day before and also agreed with the finalised shots that were or we're not going to be used. During this session India was in charge of researching music alongside Libby who was selecting clips that me and Ruby would enter onto the timeline. Whilst doing this we had realised that the establishing shots, that show bristol/clifton, do not match up as for example, one pan shot ended on the left of the screen and we had not recorded another panning shot that would bring back the audiences view to the middle to so it did not make sense to follow it up with a still shot. Thus we then took out this pan shot as it was the only one we had and discussed that it would be a waste of time to take a trip to film another one.
25/11/21
During this editing session our group split up and focused on different tasks such as editing in the source window, researching titles. I focused on researching a variety of sounds and music to add into the clips. This was successful as they added the correct sound to the end scenes. Also during this session one of us added and styled the titles to the establishing shots by carefully choosing the placements.
6/11/21
During this session we began to edit footage from the filming session on the 3rd. As one of our members was not in it was only the 3 of us selecting and choosing which clips to use whilst renaming them. Me and Ruby were deciding the sequence and where these clips were going to be added in our predited footage whilst Libby was resaerching fonts, title styles, placements and also transistions to be added as there was a change in the time during our narrative, so it must be stated.
